A new chapter in collaborative innovation has begun with the launch of the Irish-Welsh Research Alliance Award, an initiative aimed at fostering partnerships between universities in Ireland and Wales. This programme, introduced by the Wales Innovation Network (WIN) and Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland, is set to enhance the ability of researchers from both nations to secure Horizon Europe funding.
This ambitious scheme is designed to address global challenges and drive scientific progress through innovative, cross-border projects. Grants of up to €60,000 are available to eligible research teams, with funding equally split between Research Ireland and WIN, the latter drawing its share from a Welsh Government innovation grant. To qualify, applications must be jointly led by researchers from both Ireland and Wales, ensuring a strong foundation for collaborative success.
Strengthening Cross-Border Collaboration
The Irish-Welsh Research Alliance Award seeks to capitalise on the unique strengths of Irish and Welsh universities, creating a platform for impactful research and development. By promoting collaboration, the award aims to pave the way for groundbreaking solutions that benefit both regions and the broader global community.
Dr Lewis Dean, head of the Wales Innovation Network, highlighted the significance of this initiative:
“The UK’s re-association to Horizon Europe in 2024 offers an unparalleled opportunity for Welsh researchers to participate in the world’s largest research collaboration programme. This joint initiative allows Welsh academics to forge new connections with Irish counterparts, addressing critical global challenges together. I’m thrilled to see WIN facilitating this effort to showcase Welsh research excellence internationally.”
Building on a Strong Foundation
Ireland and Wales have a long-standing history of cooperation in research and innovation, underpinned by strong political and institutional ties. Celine Fitzgerald, Interim CEO at Research Ireland, echoed this sentiment, stating:
“Our partnership with Welsh universities, including Cardiff, Swansea, Aberystwyth, and Bangor, has always been robust. The launch of the Irish-Welsh Research Alliance Award will further solidify these bonds, enabling us to strengthen joint grant applications to Horizon Europe and tackle pressing global issues together.”
A Shared Vision for the Future
The award not only reinforces existing relationships but also encourages the creation of new research partnerships, ensuring both nations remain competitive on the global stage. By pooling resources and expertise, Irish and Welsh universities can address complex challenges while advancing their reputations as leaders in innovation.
This collaborative effort between WIN and Research Ireland reflects a shared vision for the future—one where cross-border partnerships drive meaningful change. As both nations look ahead, the Irish-Welsh Research Alliance Award represents a critical step in ensuring their researchers are equipped to lead in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.
