Sinn Féin leaders Mary Lou McDonald TD and Declan Kearney MLA have unveiled the latest Future of Ireland report, summarising the work of the Commission on the Future of Ireland since its inception in 2022. The report underscores significant progress in fostering discussions on constitutional change and Irish Unity through grassroots consultations, public engagements, and cross-party dialogues.
Progress Towards Irish Unity
Mary Lou McDonald, President of Sinn Féin, praised the positive engagement from diverse groups, including community organisations, economists, academics, youth groups, and unionist voices. She noted:
“The breadth of participation, including northern Protestant perspectives, has been immensely encouraging. This report is a testament to the optimism surrounding discussions on constitutional change and Irish Unity.”
The publication follows a general election in the Republic of Ireland, where Sinn Féin emerged as a powerful political force. McDonald emphasised the importance of planning for Irish Unity in the next government’s agenda, including the creation of a green paper on reunification and establishing a Citizens’ Assembly on Unity.
Key Recommendations
Sinn Féin’s report outlines practical steps to advance Irish Unity, including:
- Appointing a Minister for Reunification within the Department of An Taoiseach.
- Establishing an Oireachtas Committee on Constitutional Change.
- Organising a Citizens’ Assembly to facilitate inclusive debates on the social, economic, and political implications of reunification.
“These initiatives aim to prioritise open, pragmatic conversations about Ireland’s future while addressing challenges and opportunities,” McDonald said.
A Collaborative Vision
Declan Kearney, National Party Chairperson and Chair of the Commission, highlighted the failures of partition and the growing momentum for Irish Unity.
“Partition has failed the people of the North and the island of Ireland. The Commission’s grassroots consultations have encouraged broad participation and produced invaluable insights.”
Kearney emphasised the role of various groups contributing to the dialogue, including Ireland’s Future, Trade Unions for Irish Unity, and the SDLP’s New Ireland Commission. He noted the unprecedented cross-party consensus on the need to prepare for constitutional change.
Looking Ahead
The Commission plans an extensive programme of activities in 2025 to deepen these conversations. Kearney encouraged all communities, particularly unionists and northern Protestants, to join the dialogue, fostering a collective vision for the future of Ireland.
This report showcases what can be achieved when prioritising inclusive discussions. Sinn Féin remains committed to intensifying efforts to shape a united and prosperous Ireland.
